About
Falafel Me
Falafel Me is a fast food kitchen in Oslo driven by a man with an amazing story, coming from Palestine to Norway with absolutely nothing.
The restaurant is a tiny venue with a simple menu –and placed in the heart of the city, next to the entrance of the alley “Strøget” from Storgata. Strøget is a bar district inside a narrow alley streching between Storgata and Torggata. The kitchen is competing with dozens of other small street food kitchens and big fast food chains around the city centrum. Similarities with these smaller kitchens is lack of good visual design and personality.
Project
This concept is build upon the timeless Falafel Me logo they had from the beginning of 2021. The Logo was made by Miksmaster Agency.
My responsibility was to make window decor for the fast food restaurant as well as digital menu screens inside. The decor was old, flakey, dirty and contained information and visual identity from way back. With huge windows around the restaurant and only a logo to use –How can i make this place get the attention it deserves?

Logo and characters
‘Me’ sounds the same if you say it, I say it or some stranger says it out loud. It’s something that the person says to refer to him- or herself. It can be anybody.
That made me think.
…Let’s tell a story about who enjoys the food at Falafel Me.
Sketching
The people of Oslo is colourful, young and old, expressive and bland, people living in castles and people living under bridges. I drew them with care and as little gender, and origin specific as I could so that the expression is equal to the viewer. We are trying to create a cool look, not exclusion.
Illustration
Inside the narrow alley theres a huge window where the kitchen is. In the Kitchen theres big shelves where the window is because of little storage. I used this as a huge eye catching poster covering up the workspace and introducing Falafel Me for bypassers walking in and out of the alleyway.
On the left side I placed a sign to show them the way to the entrance of Falafel me inside the talking bubble from the logo.
Window wrapping
For the main entrance I placed the characters so that people can see into the restaurant from the other side of the road as well as introducing to the fun characters standing in line excited to get their food.
I also created an example of a light box sign, an a-board sign and packaging to show how to create a universe around the new illustrations and create a personality and strong identity for the street food kitchen.

Digital menu
The digital menu is driven by a third party service that let’s you update the images as you create new dishes, layout and campaigns. The service also lets you create mp4 files that plays in a timer so that the menu becomes lifelike. I created an example of mini animations for the menu board so that the comes to life and changes over time.

Backdoor
The owner was excited about the story, visuals and new looks of the restaurant and the finished files were delivered safely.
After the pandemic, he focused solely on his main restaurant “Habibi“ as he was planning to change locations. The finished design hasn’t seen daylight but hopefully the store will get a fresh new wrapping soon.
